| Our Facility The MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center is located in Midtown, Anchorage. MetrOasis® is a very different type of training facility. We call our look "Industrial-Tribal". The abstract metal sculptures that top our metal styling stations add very much to this look. Our tanning rooms consist of rounded wall, metal sheeting. This gives our salon a very high-tech look, which is balanced with several pieces of "tribal art". The walls are quite unique just by themselves. The colors are alternating forest green and dusty cranberry, each with their own texturizing pattern. The two color patterns are separated by a waving line of silver gray. We use a Point-of-sale computer system and teach our students this skill. We store student files, business media, and documents in a fire-safe (rated to 1,700 degrees). We carry several major lines and components from numerous other companies as well, in our retail area. We have a theory room that also serves as a break room for students, which includes a fridge, microwave oven, a toaster oven, two counters, and several stools so students can bring food from home and prepare it. There are numerous color TV. monitors mounted at varying angles to make at least one monitor visible from every location, for showing educational and hair show-technique videos during theory time. We are wheelchair accessible, and the front and the middle TV. monitors are closed captioned (in English, Spanish or French) for our hearing impaired clients. We have 19 hairdressing stations, a facial/esthetician stations, two Wolff tanning beds and one HEX tanning unit. Each of the three tanning rooms is decorated with authentic artifacts from a different geographic locations. Each hairdressing student is issued (as part of their student kit) a locking black Roll-a-bout mobile station, which contains most of the students equipment. Each station is equipped with a black hydraulic chair, counter space and own mirror. Our facial and manicure area is equipped with a leather reclining facial chair and ottoman, and manicure station. There are two mobile hood-dryers and a mobile steam processor. Sterilization units are located in the dispensary. A few plants add some warmth. There are several interesting "Klimpt" and "Maimon" wall hangings scattered throughout the facility, along with some of our awards and certificates, and original art work by Sue Shroy. You can order espresso, food, snacks, and ice cream in our Cajun / Creole cafe called Fire and Ice Cafe, through an adjoining door in the hall that leads to the bathroom. The cafe is brightly painted in yellow, purple, green, blue, and red, and is decorated with authentic artifacts from New Orleans. Just walking into the cafe will bring a smile to your face. Sometimes we have theory in the cafe. We also have meetings, and occasionally we have student events in the cafe as well. |
Our dispensary is
equipped with a 3 compartment sink, a tiled mixing area, sanitation
equipment and various chemicals used in the hairdressing field. We
stock Italy®, Allegretti®, and Jingles® color lines.
We maintain Peter Hantz®, Jingles®, Fresh Concepts®, Sexy
Hair® lines as well as some others. Our shampoo area is equipped
with four black shampoo bowls and four black self-adjusting shampoo
chairs, The shampoo bowls are mounted at varying heights to
accommodate students (and clients) of varying shapes and sizes. Our
stainless steel back-bar product units are stocked with the product
lines we carry, and have room for extra towels. We have our own domain, MetrOasis.com "Web Page" listed on the internet so prospective students can "browse" this Web Page for more information, schedules, prices, graphics, and other information offered by MetrOasis. The WebPage address for the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center is http://www.metroasis.com. We offer an on-line entrance exam at this site, and students can also log onto our webpages from home to study materials offered in class. E-Mail messages can be left for our staff and/or students at sigel@metroasis.com. The webpage address for the Fire and Ice Cafe is http://www.fireandicecafe.com We offer assistance to students that wish to design their own webpages either during their training or after they graduate from school. |

| Financial Information Following is a breakdown of the hairdressing course tuition and related fees associated with attending the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center. Included in the cost are all materials textbooks and equipment needed to fully complete the program. These materials include your writing instruments, paper, even a calculator and your coffee! There are no hidden costs. (Student kits, books, etc. will remain the property of MetrOasis until all monies owing on the student's account are paid in full (if included in course fees). Students wishing to purchase their student kits from other vendors are allowed to do so as long as the quality meets or exceeds our student kit.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Group I and Group II Classes are advanced courses offered only to licensed hairdressers. The cost of each program varies, depending on several factors (listed below) and as such, the exact cost can not be listed as it is determined on a case by case evaluation. 1. The specific training objectives of the student. 2. The training materials and books needed to complete the course. 3. The preexisting skills and/or talents of the student. 4. The quality and quantity of the equipment and/or books desired by the student. 5. The length of each course, and level of participation desired by each student. Group I Courses will be from 3 to 10 days. Group II Courses will be from 3-5 days. Specific prices for each course will be included as part of the prospective students evaluation and course plan. Students should check with the instructor to make sure that any equipment they want to use conforms with the quality standards of the course. A list of materials and books required is available for comparison (upon request). Hairdresser Student Lab Fees Kit $565 * Student Lab Fees are designed with the "reasonable" student in mind. It is not our desire that any student pay more money for their training than they need to. However, any student wishing to follow an unreasonable course of study, and, after being repeatedly instructed in the proper formulations and applications of materials, continues to waste, damage, or in any other way cause additional cost to be incurred to their particular course, will be charged accordingly. These charges may be quite minimal or may be up to an additional $276.10. Any additional charges will be determined by that particular student's behaviors. Students that incur additional fees against their lab fee account will be informed immediately, and additional fees will be contracted for, and listed in a contract addendum, before the student will be allowed to continue in their course. This is extremely rare, and usually only happens once and the problem goes away. Students that continue to waste or ruin materials related to their training, beyond their additional fees will be terminated. Our experience shows us that students that exhibit this level of stubbornness do not posses the self discipline necessary to become financially competitive hairdressers. The Student Lab Fees Kit will supply each student with the chemicals and materials to perform;

Some elements in the Hairdresser kit may be substituted for, with
similar or superior quality items, with or without notice. While this
is not common, this list is subject to availability. The hairdresser

the student's kit are paid in full. Hairdresser's Kit

This same idea applies to hairdressing. You can use inferior equipment and struggle through the job, and hopefully you would get the job done. You can also use quality equipment and do the job more efficiently, have more fun doing the job, and do a better job. Good equipment can also save your body wear and tear, especially your back and your wrists. Given the choice, I would always use the best equipment available to me. |

Work Stations Students will use a mobile workstation that is assigned to them during their time on the clinic floor. The mobile workstation will remain the property of the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center (and will remain on the premises) until all fees owed by the student (to the school) are paid in full. Students will maintain their mobile workstations, clinic floor station, counters, drawers, storage areas, lab materials, book & study materials in a safe, clean, and sanitary condition. The student may keep one (small) personal item (of their choice) on the clinic floor station while they are using it. This item must be approved by the instructor staff prior to its display. This may be a plant, a photograph, etc. Students may display plaques, awards etc. with the prior permission of the teaching staff. Dress Code Students must dress in a professional manner, but this doesn't mean boring. Hairdressers have much more freedom in interpreting “professional” than many other careers. But don’t abuse this freedom. Technician smocks or aprons should be worn by all students while performing chemical services on the clinic floor. Students will keep their technician smocks clean and in good condition at all times. Students are allowed to wash their smocks in the laundry facilities in the dispensary. It is our desire that each student develop their own (professional) personal style while enrolled at our facility. Your personal style should reflect the type of salon you wish to work in after you graduate. This personal style must not be suggestive, offensive, dirty, or unacceptable in any other way. If you are in doubt, please check with the instructor staff. Your professional image is part of your monthly evaluations so please use your best judgment in selecting your wardrobe. If you are still in doubt regarding a specific dress code, ask the instructor for a written copy. We want you to practice being the stylist you are going to be while you're still in school. Then you won't have to reinvent yourself later. |
Intellectual Property All records, materials, information, etc. used in our training facility is the property of the MetrOasis Advanced Training Center. This information may be distributed specifically to or assigned to the student under license for personal use of that student. Under no circumstance will this material be given to, sold to, loaned to, or in any other way presented to any person or business that is in economic competition with the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center. Removal of any unauthorized material or information (without written authorization by the director) will be grounds for immediate dismissal, and possible legal action. Your training will include marketing strategies, specialized techniques, and general operational information that is specific to the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center. This information may include, but is not limited to, trade secrets, client records, appointment books, marketing strategies, any and all financial concerns, and all records, forms, manuals, and any printed matter. This information is not to be distributed without the specific written permission of the director of the school. Cheating and Plagiarism The MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center will not tolerate cheating of any manner. This breach of our trust is considered grounds for immediate dismissal. Our relationship with you will based on honesty. If you are incapable of honesty, then it will be impossible to have a long term relationship with us, OR your future employers. Students suspected of cheating on our entrance exam may be required to retest. Students not being able to approximate their original score may be terminated. Smoking There is a “no smoking” policy in effect at MetrOasis® at all times. This no smoking includes all tobacco products, lit or not. There is an area behind the building that is suitable for smoking. If you decide to smoke in this area, please remove any materials you use. Please do not keep the back door open while you smoke. Please do not leave cigarette butts outside on the sidewalk or in the parking lot. |
Leave of Absence Students are allowed a one week leave of absence. An additional one week leave may be granted for emergencies. A student must be in good academic standing in order to be approved for a leave of absence. Each student is required to complete their notebook including the materials and tests for each theory segment. Students missing segments due to a leave of absence will not graduate until the missing segments are completed. Payments for tuition and other charges must be kept current. Failure to do so will result in dismissal. Leave of absences require approval of the school director. Students may or may not be charged for the hours they miss on a leave of absence as this determination is made on a case by case basis. If a student's leave of absence affects their graduation date, the Student Loan office must be contacted. If the student does not return from a LOA on the designated end date of the LOA, each missing day will be determined to be an unexcused absence. After 3 unexcused absenses, the student may be terminated. |
Attendance / Punctuality It is our intention to provide Anchorage with the best hairdressers we are able to produce. To achieve this mutual goal there needs to be exceptional effort on behalf of the training facility as well as each student. Each student is expected to make great efforts to fulfill their contractual schedule. Each student should arrive prepared for the days activities on time. Being prepared means looking professional when you arrive, not doing your hair and/or makeup after you arrive. Each student should have the necessary materials prepared and intact before the class begins. The MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center maintains a very full and complex curriculum calendar. This was necessary due to the very large amount of material we must cover. Students are permitted 3 "personal" days in addition to the scheduled "breaks" in our calendar. Students will also be allowed 2 sick days @ month, for a total of 20 sick days in an 11 month course. Sick days in excess of this number will be considered unexcused absences. On the fourth unexcused absence the student will be terminated. Personal days may be used throughout the term of training for personal business, medical appointments, family illnesses or other personal reasons. Students can have a one week leave during their training schedule, and a one week emergency leave. (The MetrOasis Advanced Training Center maintains a "wait list" of students each day a current student misses delays a new student the opportunity of beginning their training). Students that miss a day for any reason are responsible for making up the assignments for those particular days. All classes are offered twice per year. The student will not be eligible to graduate until their assignment roster is complete. Unexcused absences and problems with punctuality are grounds for dismissal. If you have made every effort to attend your scheduled class and either cannot or you know that you will arrive late, then it is your responsibility to notify the training center (a minimum of one hour) before the fact. Students can call the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center 24 hours a day and leave a detailed message on our computerized "Voice-Mail" system, or our answering machine. Both of these systems automatically include a “time/date stamp”. Students that will be late or absent must call by 8:30 AM. (Leaving a message doesn't automatically make your absence or lateness excused.) Students scheduled to perform practical operations on clients will be expected to begin the service when scheduled. Each student will be required to have their station ready, products ready, and be prepared to perform the service at the scheduled time. Students will confirm their appointments. If you need time off you need to inform the school in writing, one week prior. The school reserves the right to approve or disapprove the time request at their sole discretion. Approval for time requests will not be unreasonably withheld, but approval will not automatically be given. All time requests will be in writing and are not considered approved unless signed by the director of the training facility. Students that ask for a certain day off, and their request is denied, but take the day off anyway will be recorded as a non-excused absence. After 3 unexcused absences the student will be terminated. It is the student's responsibility to attend the theory classes scheduled for their particular program. It is the student's responsibility to make up any theory classes that are missed. Each student is required to complete their notebook including the materials and tests for each theory segment. Students missing segments due to absence will not graduate until the missing segments are completed. |
Verification of Absences Students will not be required to provide doctor notes for their first ten sick days. Any sick days after the first ten will require a note from their doctor excusing their sick day. Absenses not excused by a doctor's note will be considered unexcused. Students may have three unexcused absenses. They will be terminated on the fourth unexcused absense. We only have sick days, personal days, days you attend, and leave days. Please do NOT invent new types of days and then expect us to figure out how they fit into your contract. Either you are sick, you are here, you are taking one of your three personal days,or you are on leave. |
Attitude Attitude is EVERYTHING in the salon industry. Your attitude will determine your success. MetrOasis® offers "vocational" training, that is to say, we train you to perform a specific job. We have gathered the best of the best, from all techniques and methods we could find. This is what we offer. Students that say "but that's not how I usually do it", are not exhibiting what we call a "teachable spirit". There is no room left in their brain to learn the correct way of doing something because they're already done that service a couple of times in their kitchen. A student doing a couple of haircuts in their kitchen for their friends does not equal our years of training and experience, learning from the masters in the hair industry. Students are required to maintain a teachable spirit during their training. Some students feel the need to be impressed with our skills before they will accept anything we have to say. This is a great waste of time, as by the time we have sufficiently impressed them, half of their training time has been wasted and they lag behind trying to catch up. Some students react negatively to instructional criticism of their work. When they receive a 95% they whine in front of clients, "why didn't I get a 100%?" It seems that some students expect a perfect score for everything they do, regardless if the quality is there or not. I'm not sure if this is due to the culture of the day, or if this is what happens in public school these days, but we are in the business of training craftpersons. This means that you start training, and you improve and improve. You don't begin your training with perfect and continue from there. If this were the case, there would be no need to attend a training program. The director will provide the final determination of what "arguing is". If you know you have a history of arguing with everyone, please choose another school as this will not be tolerated at MetrOasis®. |
Child Care MetrOasis Advanced Training Center does not provide childcare for its staff, students or clientele. In the interest of our staff, students and clientele, children are not permitted inside the facility unless the child is having a service performed or has a responsible person to care for them. Please inform the director if you are having difficulty finding a child care provider and we will do our best to assist you. Telephone The telephone is the life blood of any salon. We treat our phones the same way they do in a real salon. It is important that each student understand the importance of the telephone and telephone etiquette. The telephone is for business. No telephone calls will be made by students on the business line. The front desk will take up to two messages per student, per day. Students abusing this privilege will not be offered any messages. Students may use the pay phone at the front desk, for a time limit of 3 minutes per call. Continued abuse of the telephone rules will be grounds for disciplinary measures and may be grounds for dismissal. The main business line is used for the salon, the school, the tanning salon, the espresso cafe', and the distributorship, as well as other necessary business requirements. Please keep this in mind. Students wishing to receive a fax, an E-Mail, or other electronic media must make arrangements in advance for each transmission. Students abusing this privilege will loose it, and will be prevented from utilizing office communications equipment. |
Student In Waiting Program Students that have been accepted into the program but don't have a space available yet may participate in our Student In Waiting Program. In this way the student feels bonded with our training facility and can keep up on the latest status of their start date. This program also keeps the student in touch with other students that will be enrolled at the training facility at the same time. This makes "breaking the ice" easier when a space becomes available, and the S.I.W. Student begins their training. The Student In Waiting can have their hair done for the minimum "product charge" fee instead of the regular rate for any hair service they wish to have done. If the Student receives beauty services as part of our class participation or in fulfilling another student's requirements, there is no charge for the service. Grievance Policy Students should first advise their instructor of any grievance they may have. If the problem is not satisfactorily resolved, the student should then notify the school director. If the student is not satisfied with the resolution of their grievance, a complaint may be filed with the Alaska Commission of Postsecondary Education. If you are having a problem, please let us know about it. |

References Students may have potential employers contact the school for references regarding the student’s performance at school. These inquiries must be in writing and addressed to the director of the school. Any references given by the school will focus on the employability of the student and not on any personal information. Students, stylists, guest artists, etc. phone numbers and addresses will not be given out to anyone without a written request by the person related to MetrOasis. There will be no exceptions. It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows. Epictetus (50 - 138 AD) Employment While no one can guarantee you employment after you graduate, we will do whatever we can to help you find employment. Upon graduation you will receive a certificate from the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center. If you attend any advanced classes or workshops you will also receive a certificate from that particular class or program. |
Transfer of hours and credits No school, (including the MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center) can guarantee that the hours and/or credits you may receive at our facility will be transferable to another school or state. The decision to accept transfer students and/or hours and/or credits is up to the discretion of the director of the receiving school, and will depend on comparibility of curricula and accredidation. If you are considering a move, you should contact the school that you wish to transfer to and confirm their transfer policies are before you begin your training. The MetrOasis® A.T.C. does not usually accept transfer students of other beauty schools in Alaska because we must spend so much time retraining people that think they have been trained. We have found this to be very frustrating for the student as well as our selves. MetrOasis® usually only accepts refresher students currently holding current Alaska hairdresser licenses. If a particular transfer student has a very compelling reason as to their desire to transfer and they are willing to perform a test-cut for the director, they should schedule an appointment with the director. This policy can be waived, but it is not common. |

Hours of Operation The MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center is many things to many people. This is by design and not by happenstance. There is a great diversity of activities scheduled at all times within the training facility. To the basic student this is a place to get their initial contact with the hairdressing industry. To the post graduate stylist this is a place to perfect their skills and techniques to a higher degree. To the experienced professional this is a place to refresh and revive skills they may already have or they may learn new skills. We also offer classes for our clients, local salons, and provide support for fashion and hair shows as well as numerous workshops each year. Because of this wide range of opportunities each person may have a varied schedule of training. The general hours MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center will be open for Full-time, Basic Hairdressing Training are as follows; Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm The general hours MetrOasis® Advanced Training Center will be open for Part-time, Basic Hairdressing Training are as follows; Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9:00 pm to *6:00 pm, Wednesday 12:00 noon to *6:00 pm Saturday, 9:00 am to *4:00 pm (* depends on individual contract) This schedule is designed to accommodate both full-time and part-time students. Each student’s actual contractual hours are listed in their contract. Other activities will be scheduled “at will." Each student will be expected to maintain the schedule they are contracted for. If for some reason this schedule needs to be adjusted, or a student needs to find a makeup class (due to excused or unexcused absence) there is ample opportunity. |
