It is simply to manage our salon culture and to provide the best environment for our students. This is very important to us. We seem to get primarily just three different kinds of students. We have lots of very successful students because we screen so heavily in our enrollment process. We do make the occasional mistake and enroll a student that somehow got through our filtering process, but it is getting rarer and rarer when these mistakes occur.

Know-It-Alls

The rarest of these students is the Know-It-All student. We call them this because they really do believe that they “Know-it-all”. This is mostly because they're experiencing the Dunning-Kruger Effect, but they don't know this. A variation of this idea was put forth by George Lakoff when he described the classic categorization syndrome where people believe that THEIR specific point of view is SO logical, SO universally accepted that you must be a complete moron if you disagree with them even though they are completely wrong. So, they don’t actually know it all, or even most of it all they just feel that they do.

You can identify these students by the fact that they always interrupt me while I’m trying to teach, they finish my sentences for me… WRONGLY! And they’re so busy talking that they rarely learn anything. These students usually have serious inferiority complexes that they try to overcome by overcompensating by being the class expert. They are very disruptive during class, and they can steal your progress and your training time if you let them. They are very rarely successful to most people's thinking but they do have their points of pride in some vague accomplishment that most successful people would consider quite trivial. Another destructive tendency of know-it-alls is that they will change our service protocols because they know a “better way”, which screws up our already-existing clientele. It also screws up your education because they mix made-up techniques, policies, etc with ours but it’s hard to determine this for people who are newer. In other words, they're the short-cut experts in their own mind.

We usually end up with a know-it-all student about every nine or ten start dates, so pretty rare overall. The age of know-it-alls fluctuates a lot and can be anyone from 18 all the way to 60 years of age. We’ve had know-it-alls be terminated their second day of class all the way through graduation. These students rarely learn anything new because they don’t see the need since they already know everything. They usually have miserable lives after they leave their twenties. But they never do well in the beauty business and they waste both their time and money as well as yours. Again, not that common.

What-EV-rrrrrrrrs

We also get more What-EV-rrrrr students than know-it-all students, but still not that many. Maybe one every couple of class starts. These students are over privileged, believe that knowing certain things or knowing certain people make them special even though they've accomplished little on their own merits, and they have come to believe that their mission in life is to critique everything that they encounter, even things that they know absolutely nothing about or have any experience with.

You can identify these students by the turned, tilted head (as if holding their own head up is too much work for their necks), the stink-eye face, the rolling eyes, and they shift their positions and/or head position about two or three times each minute. It kind of seems like they’re being tortured whenever someone tries to get them to learn something if it doesn't have something to do with SnapChat, Instagram or one of the Kardashians.

They want everything presented to them as entertainment, not just generic entertainment, but specific entertainment in their chosen genre, at a timing of their choice and for the duration of their choice. These students also, have no experience and no training but that won’t matter to them. These students can be very infectious to impressionistic students who join their quest in life to be dissatisfied with everything they encounter. The classes they seem to hate the most are business classes, customer service classes, marketing and SEO classes.

We typically get one of these students in every other or every few class starts and they are almost always 18, 19 or 20 years old, but we’ve had them as old as 25 years old. Every once in a while we get two in one class start which is always disastrous for the entire class because they impede the progress of the class and the other students in these classes only receive a portion of the training that they wanted to receive. This usually occurs when the average age of any class start is less than 30.4 years of age. We try to maintain class starts with an average of 32.2 or higher. But, we can’t control the population or everybody that wants to train here. So far, we’ve only had three class starts be ruined by What-EV-rrrrrs since we started our school many, many years ago.

Successfuls

We get the most of the successful type of student than all of the others by FAR. This alone is why we accept about one in every twenty seven contacts that we have as accepted students. In fact, this is the goal of all of our screening processes during our enrollment procedures. These students listen, take really good notes, they're very helpful, kind, and organize their objectives, lessons and ideas into a workable format and continually add to their collection of notes as their careers progress. These students also are very kind and they encourage each other in their pursuit of success in their chosen careers. They participate in class discussions, they do their work on time, and they are very professional with each other and with our clients and they are very focused.

The range of successful type students ranges from having a successful career/business all the way to superstars who really excel in the beauty industry. Successful students turn into successful beauty industry professionals because they realize that our job as a school is to provide our students with tools which our successful students then organize into functioning sets of skills that they use to create their own unique niche from which they develop successful businesses and/or careers. We happen upon a few "Superstar" students each year as well, which is a subcategory of the Successful students. These people simply shine because they're found their purpose and are now beginning to fulfil their ambitions. They pitch in and do way more than they are required to, the connect with clients in the most amazing way and they make a lasting impression while they are in school. We find several of these students each year.

Conclusion.

IF you are in control of your own psychological status by means of accountability, discipline and awareness you can choose which of these types of students that you will be. Many times though, the psychological characteristics of all three types of students is hard-wired into their personality and it is difficult to impossible for these people to change their own behaviors but several have been successful in controlling these behaviors until they're accepted as students when their real personalities emerge and a few can control their natures until they graduate, which we really appreciate a lot.

If you are a successful type of student, use your MCF super powers to protect your own training and the training of those around you. The Kryptonite of Know-It-Alls and What-EV-rrrrs is confrontation and accountability. This is why we spend about 30% of our entire schedule managing our salon culture. You can’t usually change the Know-It-Alls or the What-EV-rrrrs, but you can protect your own investment in time, money and effort as well as protecting your own environment so that you have a more pleasant experience. It is interesting to note that we've had lots of students make life-long friends in our programs and this makes us very happy.

Are You Accredited?

We don't get this question every day but we are asked this question from time to time. Most people don't actually understand what accreditation is, and many, many more don't realize that over 90% of all beauty schools are really, really horrible. It's not that they're just not good, they're HORRIBLE, bad, terrible, etc..

Marinello Beauty Schools were all "accredited" beauty schools, which means that they jumped through some very complicated hoops and paid a lot of money so that they could accept federal money to finance their students. Many people think that if a school is "accredited" that this is the same as being branded as being 'good" by the US government. This is an artificial standing that holds little credibility within the beauty industry. This is similar to a cook getting a job in France. In the US an applicant would walk into a kitchen with a resume while a cook applying for a job in France would walk into a kitchen with his knives and the chef would hand them a potato so that he could watch their skills. Top salons require a test haircut, or two. This is to see if you have any skills not if you have a magic paper.

So, if Marinella had 56 accredited schools this would mean that these were good schools, right? Yet on February 5th, 2016, Marinella closed all 56 of their accredited schools due to fraud specifically related to their governmental financing. Regency Beauty Schools had 79 accredited beauty schools, so they must also be good, right? And yet, they closed all of their accredited beauty schools in September 2016, Regency closed all of their 79 accredited beauty schools also specifically related to governmental financing. So much for accreditation representing quality.

These schools not only closed, but they also ripped off their students by requiring their former students to pay their tuition payments even though they were not able to complete their training or to attend classes at the closed schools. Some people will try to tell you that the big chain schools are problematic but the "designer" or "brand" schools like TIGI, Paul Mitchell and Schwarzkoph are really good and they're accredited. Don't try attending the Schwarzkoph beauty school in Bellingham then, because they also closed do to financing problems. The Paul Mitchell school in St. George also closed. The Paul Mitchell, Schwarzkoph and TIGI schools are better than the others mentioned here but their tuition costs are also three, four or even five times higher. In fact, Renon's Beauty School in Seattle, the horrible school that I first attended was purchased (after I left) by a new owner who converted it into a Paul Mitchell school, which then closed. What would you think about a school that doesn't keep its commitments to you but requires that you keep your financial commitments to them leaving you with many, many thousands of dollars of debt but no way to repay this debt, because they closed and left you stranded. Couldn't happen? http://www.wbaltv.com/article/beauty-school-closes-suddenly-leaving-students-in-debt/7148378

If you think that this couldn't happen because the government is involved and they will protect you, think again. The very reason these schools ended up in the terrible situation they were in was because of government involvement. Take one incompetent government program, run by incompetent government employees, mix this with one, or several, greedy school owners and you're well started on the recipes of corruption, fraud and disappointment.

Accreditation in the beauty industry doesn't have the same outcome as academic schools because you're not going to be able to take your "credits" from a beauty school and then apply for your master's degree at a "school of higher learning" within the beauty industry and then after that, you can't take your credits with you and get a Ph.D. at a school of even higher learning. The entire reason beauty school seek accreditation is to secure financing for their students. ESPECIALLY if some of these financing options is free in the form of grants.

People have the wrong idea about financing. I remember one very confused applicant to contacted us numerous times because she didn't understand why she would have to pay for her tuition, her housing, her books or her student kit because she was a "single mom." She really, truly believed that because she was a single parent that everything should be free for her as if she had attained some special status that would place her on a pedestal. She wanted us to directed her to all of these free programs and when we tried to explain to her that there were no programs just for single moms she didn't believe us.

When we first started our school we tried to include some special government financing programs. We had a student who signed up and began taking classes, but their vehicle broke down because they never changed the oil. Then they got a bike, but the bike got a flat tire. Then they got a skateboard but the wheel broke. After they dropped out we found out that this was the seventh program that they had dropped out of. We've had students in these programs complete their training just to get a job in the fast food industry when they could have gotten this same job without any training. The governmental agency counted this as a "successful placement" because the student got a job. A job they could have easily gotten if they had simply applied for without attending our school and wasting thousands and thousands of tax payer's money. Because of this we no longer accept J.T.P.A. funding, most D.V.R. funding, etc. In the case of J.T.P.A. we made special note that in every occasion they lied to us or lied to our student regarding their financial arrangements or the status of the student.

Why don't you accept this type of payment? Beyond the lying, and the fake placement statistics, the main reason is that to qualify for this type of financing you must prove that you have one huge obstacle that is standing in your path to success or two or three medium obstacles while we specifically test each applicant to make sure that there are no obstacles in their path to success. So, obviously there are opposite philosophies at work here and clashes are bound to occur. This doesn't prevent hostile, rude and even abusive employees of these government agencies from trying to force us to accept their financing every couple of years. Now, we simply don't respond to them. We do however get perspective students who show up with a list of questions that they must ask at least three schools before they can complete their screening process. These are just some of the many reasons that we put all of this information on our web pages.

So, while we don't have a problem with accredited beauty schools, we find that there are many more problems with the attached financing than problems that are solved and almost without incident, these schools have much worse curriculums than small, private beauty schools. In fact, because of this trend, we are a very small, private boutique beauty school. We have much better placement rates and much, much better success rates after the person is successfully placed in the beauty industry. Our tuition is just a fraction of these other beauty schools as well. We also have some of the best hairdressing and esthetics training programs in the entire country and the best esthetician student kit in the world that we are aware of. And we are able to accomplish all of this with much lower tuition rates.

We do accept Alaska Student Loans, some grants from Native Corporations and payment plans but the largest share (by far) of our students pay for their training 30 days before the beginning of their program.

These are just some of the reasons that we haven't pursued accreditation to secure another financing option for our training programs and because we are usually booked solid for the upcoming months on a regular basis, we probably won't be pursuing this option in the future.

Dolphins - Things We Learn While Traveling #5

A couple of years ago we did a Dolphin experience in Key Largo. Florida. The name of this place was Dolphins Plus. We didn't know much about dolphins so we took a class before we went into the water. They're really interesting creatures and quite extraordinary actually. I immediately connected with them and felt really good hanging out with them, talking to them, watching them swim around. They seemed to understand that some people were different than others because they avoided some of the people but were attracted to others. They explained that many people have a euphoric feeling while in the water with dolphins because of their sonar capabilities. They explained that the sonar waves tickle the nervous system in your spine. I don't really know much about this but you can certainly tell from our facial expressions in these photos that we were very euphoric.

After our experience I engaged a couple of the employees in some conversation and asked them some questions. I was quite taken by the level of appreciation and true affection that these employees had for the dolphins. I was really surprised by some of the answers that I received from them. I also learned a great life lesson from the dolphins. They feed the dolphins frozen fish but the dolphins really like live fish much better but this is not practical. The employees couldn't do anything about this but the dolphins could. When a frozen fish is thrown to a dolphin, they bite a piece of it off and carry it in their mouth the the fence that connects their pool with the sea water canal. They wait until they see a fish swimming by and they then spit out the piece of frozen fish and when another fish swims up to eat the piece of frozen fish, the dolphin sucks in the fresh fish.

What an amazing lesson! If life gives you something that you don't really care for, instead of simply disregarding that thing, use it. That unwanted thing may still have value, use it to get what you really want. As far as I can think, all of our other travel lessons have been from people, this is the only one that was provided by a non-human. What a truly great lesson though? Figure out the characteristics of something you have and trade it for something better. It's very difficult to think about my dolphin friends in Key Largo without smiling but I really appreciate the life lesson they taught me about settling for something less than what I really want.

Don't do it. Be as clever as a dolphin and go after your goals.

Gondola - Things We Learn While Traveling #4

"The rule is that there are no rules."Aristotle OnassisGondolas. Most people would have simply said, "Well, that's just how things are." and left it at that. How many times in life do we do this without even thinking. But how much cooler, how much more effective is it to stop and think, and THEN act? The fact is, that just because almost all other boats are symmetrical and that you know you're going to have that annoying person dogging you when they discover that you're doing something different, all those other people and that annoying person aren't going to be the ones paddling your boat around the canal. So do what works for YOU. What a great lesson for life!

You may have watched a gondola slip gently through the water in Venice and thought nothing further about the various elements of these beautiful boats but there is a lot that you may have missed. The ornamental blade on the front tells quite a story as each element of this piece of art represents the various islands, bridges, etc. From the particular arch of the Rialto Bridge the hat of the Doge to the glass blowing island of Murano, each part makes up a part of the beautiful entirety. If you want to truly understand Venice, do a search on any of the terms shown in this photo and you'll open a world of history that will blow your socks off!

It is also interesting to me that gondolas aren't built from a random stack of wood. Gondolas are made with 280 distinct parts that are built from fir, oak, cherry, walnut, elm, mahogany, larch and lime and the rèmo (oar) is made of beech. Obviously, some more intensive thinking.

There used to be about 10,000 in Venice when the United States was founded as a country and there are now only 425 gondolas in Venice but I still find them really intriguing. Whenever I have a project in front of me I try to remember the gondola and I try to analyze whether I am approaching this project "in the box" or if I am truly thinking it through like the original designer of the gondola.

Terroir - Things We Learn While Traveling #3

Terroir“Wine is sunlight, held together by water.” Galileo GalileiTerroir - The French have a great word called "Terroir". Terroir can be very loosely translated as "a sense of place," The French believe that a wine is greatly affected by goût de terroirs or by the physical characteristics and environment where the grapes are grown, which is of course, true. They have taken this belief and developed it into an art. We recently returned from a trip to the Bordeaux region of France where one acre of wine growing quality land sells for about €16,000,000 or just a little under $17,000,000. Several different wines from nearly the exact same spot can have very different characteristics. Higher vineyards may catch more of the morning sun while lower vineyards may have more volcanic elements in the soil. Each vineyard is different.

(French pronunciation: Tere-wa [tɛʁwaʁ] from terre, "land"). These special characteristics that include geography, geology, climate, interaction with plant genetics, and many other factors make each wine unique. Instead of merely focusing on the grapes themselves, much care and consideration is also afforded to these contributing factors in the production of world class wines. We try to incorporate goût de terroirs in our beauty services.

We realize that you have many different choices when it comes to salons, spas and beauty schools in Anchorage. We do not take it lightly that you choose MetrOasis to provide your beauty services to you. This is why terroir is so very important to us. This is one of the reasons that we are very different from the rest.

We are not merely trying to make you look good, we want you to also FEEL good. This is why we go to all the effort to provide extras that make your services memorable. When you first arrive, you'll pass through a glassed portion of the building with wall to wall plants instead of just carpet, sheetrock and wood. You can begin to feel yourself relax even before you reach our front door.

As you pass through our front door you are greeted by an spectacular antique cabinet from France which was created in the early 1600s, a unique antler chair and other interesting things to see. You can check out our beautiful butterfly collection or marvel at our megalodon tooth collection. There's a very good chance that you'll see Sue's smiling face at the front desk, that you'll hear world music and you'll be offered a complimentary espresso drink, a hot chocolate, coffee, tea or a soft drink.

You can check out our full sized knight and read about the knight's code and about our philosophy of living, doing business customer service. All of these elements make the experience of getting your hair cut, having a highlight, a facial, or whatever other services you have done more enjoyable. This is our version of terroir. Instead of only focusing on the actual service, we also focus on all of the elements surrounding your service which we feel makes it more memorable and enjoyable. We hope you agree.

New Shoes - Things We Learn While Traveling #2

Camden Locks Leather Shop“A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. Sue found this amazing leather backpack & while they were wrapping her purchase up for our trip the store owner and I chatted for a while. He asked us why we were in London and we explained that we were here for an advanced haircutting class and had a free day to explore London. He asked us where we had traveled to, how we like travel & I explained that we always learned a lot while traveling.

I asked him what great life lessons he had learned. He said that he had arrived in London with only $64 in his pocket and now he owned one of the largest leather goods shops in London. He said that he learned a lot of great lessons from his father. I asked him to tell me one. He said that one time as a boy, his father took him to a shoe store and asked him to pick out a pair of shoes. He said that he really wanted a fancy pair of shoes in the store window that were black & white. His father then told him that he could buy any pair of shoes in the store except that particular pair of shoes in the window.

He didn't want to make his father angry by questioning him in front of the shop owner so he waited until they were on the way home and asked him why he couldn't buy the only pair of shoes that he really liked. His father explained to him that if he waited until after his report card came out and if he got an A he would buy that pair of shoes for him. He said that it was a great lesson to him not to just settle for that thing that was in front of him in the moment, but to wait for something that he really wanted and to then buy that. What a great lesson. He worked hard, made good choices and now he owns his own leather shop in London. Great story, great lesson.

What Do You Do In An Emergency? IF you are awake and paying attention that is. On one trip to Venice we visited the island of Murano which is where the glass blowers work. Apparently they were asked to work here for safety reasons.

When we returned to Venice, we visited a glass display shop that showcased the craftsmanship of the workshop that we had just left. As we were browsing throughout the shop admiring the dozens and dozens of $36,000 chandeliers the door of the adjoining shop abruptly slammed close for some reason and all of the chandeliers shook & jingled. We asked the proprietor what they did in case of an earth quake. He struggled for a few moments consulting with the woman that he worked with to try an understand our gestures for earthquake and then ye smiled and said "Ah, yes, terremoto", the Italian word for earthquake. He then said, "Yes! We turn out the lights, sit down and we have an espresso. When it is over, we turn the lights back on."

When we asked him why, he explained that new shop owners freak out and try to catch the chandeliers so that they down't swing into each other and break into pieces on the floor but that older, more experienced shop owners realize that they all swing in unison and they'll eventually slow down at the same time so the best thing to do is let them slow down on their own. We aren't always successful at doing this, but we do try. Whenever there is an emergency or a disaster, instead of freaking out, we simply turn out the lights, have an espresso and when it is over we assess the situation and then determine what is to be done. Clearer heads prevail after the emergency and better choices are to be had.

Wormholes

Wormholes... This is seriously hard wood and it was even difficult to drill holes in the back for the earthquake cables but apparently worms don't have much trouble at all boring through hardwood. Interestingly...

In 1503 Christopher Columbus was exploring Veragua and the Mosquito Coast from Panama to the Cape of Honduras when he visited a cacique named Quibian. His ships became waterlogged due to wormholes which marooned him in Jamaica. Columbus knew when the next lunar eclipse was due so he convinced the natives who had stopped providing him with food and provisions to begin again or his god would be angry. He presented them with a deadline, the date of the eclipse. When they provided no more provisions by that date, the eclipse occurred which frightened the natives so they began providing food & provisions again and the repairs on the worm-eaten ships could be completed and he continued his explorations.

The product we use to treat our fine antiques is Feed-N-Wax. I paint it on with a small brush, allow it to dry to an opaque finish and I then hand rub the finish with my bare hands.

There is a fair amount of work required in the maintenance of fine antiques but our clients and students are worth the effort. Maybe I'm being just a bit paranoid but I carefully fill each wormhole with Feed-N-Wax just to make sure that there are no 500 year-old worms still eating away at our cabinets.

Entrance Exam

We require an entrance exam for several reasons. One of which, is to prevent our classes from being bogged down by a student that can't keep up. Another is to prevent a student from investing months of effort and thousands of dollars to prepare for an exam that they will not be able to pass. Another is to prevent that same student from getting into a career in which they can't prosper. Our entrance policies are here to protect us and they're here to protect you.So, let's do an analogy. Seat

Our entrance policies are here to protect us and they're here to protect you.

So, let's do an analogy. Seat belts.

"I don't like wearing seat belts because they're too uncomfortable." So, does the person in the hospital bed seem more or less uncomfortable than wearing a seat belt? You wear a seat belt to prevent the worse discomfort of being stuck in a hospital bed.

YOU - This is how this issue relates to you. Some of the comments/questions we've had recently... It's not fair that I can't enroll in your program just because I couldn't pass a test." Actually, it is not only "fair" it is SUPER-fair because we're trying to prevent you from being frustrated and broke. THAT'S fair isn't it? "I have really bad ADD." Well, you're still going to have "really bad ADD" when you attempt to pass the state board exam which is WAY harder than passing our entrance exam. So, if we accept you even though you failed the entrance exam, or cheated your way in, how are you going to pass THAT exam? Cheat? "But I have really bad test anxiety." Same answer, you're going to have really bad test anxiety when you try to pass the state board exam but you'll be WAY more stressed out than sitting at home on your lap top in your own environment. These are all reasons that have to do with YOU. Please don't attempt to short circuit our system.

OTHERS - Now, for the reasons that relate to others. You will most likely be sitting in a class of 5 to 10 hand picked people learning the beauty business and and we must prepare you for the same state board exam that all the other students in the other states must pass. The hours required in other states might range from 1,200 down to maybe 650 hours. In Alaska, WE only have 350 hours to prepare you for the same exam. So, if the entire class has to stop so that we can explain the same sentence to you 7 or 8 times (happened before), or if we have to stop 4 or 5 times during every single sentence and SPELL all of the 2 or 3 syllable words for you (happened before), you would have not only ripped US off, ripped YOU off, but you would also have ripped all of the other students in your class off because they paid for an entire program but they're going to have to proceed through that program at 10%-15% of the normal speed, which means that you have now stolen THEIR programs from them as well. So, there IS no reason to allow people that can't pass the entrance exam to enroll in one of our programs, or to keep a student enrolled that has cheated their way into one of our programs.

Our entrance exam and our interview is how we screen our students to make sure that they can keep up and that they're not going to interfere with our other students from completing their programs.

Another point to this blog post is that our entrance exam barely qualifies students to enroll in one of our programs as the materials that we cover in the programs are MUCH more difficult to master than our entrance exam. If we allowed you to simply skip the entrance exam, what would you do in school? You would not be able to keep up. We cover chemistry, anatomy & physiology, cosmetic ingredients, communication skills, business, etc. There ARE not short cuts. This requires a lot of effort.

The final point I'd like to make is regarding confidence. When you accomplish something of value, something

that was difficult you feel great, you are beaming with confidence. When you accomplish something mediocre or when you cheat your way through something you gain no confidence whatsoever because you haven't

achieved anything worth mentioning. Our students work really hard to accomplish their goals and it is important that all of our students have intelligent and professional companions with which to interact. This is how we maintain the quality of our school culture. We will not compromise our environment or the level of education that we provide our students. The results that are obtained today are the result of work done previously. Simply retesting and retesting until you receive a passing score creates an artificial appearance

of accomplishment which will quickly come crashing down when you fail to pass the state board exam.

Still want us to enroll you even though you can't pass the entrance exam or the interview?

We're attending the 50th Anniversary of Cosmoprof Bologna in Italy.
